Massachusetts & some of their decendants

                             First Generation

	1.	HENRY COLLINS was born about 1606. He died on 20 Feb 1687 in Lynn, MA and
was buried as Henry grandfather of Henry Collins 3rd 1

Henry Collins came to New England aboard the Ship ABIGAIL in 1635. The
ABIGAIL was mastered by Robert Hackwell. The Collins Family according to the ship's
passenger list consisted of HENRY COLLINS, aged 29; ANN COLLINS, aged 30;
HENRY COLLINS, age 5; JO: COLLINS, age 3; MARGERY COLLINS, age 2.
Henry was certified from the Parish of Stepney, England and was listed as a starch maker.
He had a contingent of five servants Joshua Griffith, age 25; Hugh Alley, age 27; Mary
Roote, age 15; Jo: Coke, age 27 & Geo: Burdin, age 24.2

Henry and his family settled in Lynn, MA. He was made a freeman 9 Mar
1636/37.3 At a Court of Assistants held at Boston 4 Sept 1638, Henry Collins was fined
five shillings for not appearing when he was called to serve upon the Grand Jury.4 In 1638
Henry received 80 acres & ten of land, upland & meadow in the land distribution for the
Town of Lynn.5 At a Salem General Court of 18 Feb. 1645 Henry was one of those
accused by Wm. Witter of being present at a baptism of a child in the town of Lynn and
thereby taking the name of "the father, son & Holy gost" in vain.6 In March of 1661
Henry Collins & John Hathorne were accused of not laying out 40 acres of land to
Wm. Longley which was his equal proportion as an inhabitant of Lynn according to the
1638 land division. Longley, the plaintiff, won his case.7 In a court case recorded Mar
1662, Robert Lord, Town Marshall complained that he went to Lynn to serve papers
upon Henry Collins to satisfy a judgment to William Longley but Collins had no goods
to attach and refused to go to prison. John Hathorne refused to assist the Marshall in
arresting Collins and came to the aid of the defendant instead. Henry testified that when
Marshall Lord "had levied his execution and asked for assistance, he turned to deponent
who had no hat upon his head and said that they had better go into the house because it
was very cold weather." Robert Burges aged about 40 years deposed that Collins said
there were cattle in his yard which they could zeize and a colt belonging to his son but the
Marshall was not sure of ownership of this stock and levied the execution anyway.
Edward Ierson, aged about 62, deposed that Collins told the Marshall that the debt was
not his and that he should go and take the common. He also stated that he should have
twenty acres of his own land about his house or he said "here is the Towne Common
before my dore, take that for your satisfaction.", all of which the Marshall refused. One
accusation after another was hurled in this case until it was finally settled in favor of
Collins, the defendant.8

Henry Collins signed a deposition relating to a corn mill in Lynn, MA 20 Nov.
1662, aged 55 years.9

On 27 Mar 1663 John Mansfield, aged about 44 years deposed that at a church
meeting at Mr. Whiting's house, John Hathorne charged William Longley with the
breach of the ninth commandment bearing false witness against his neighbor Henry
Collins.10

Henry Collins served as selectman in Lynn in 1666.11 At a court meeting which
took place June 1668, Henry Collins Sr., one of the grand jury of Salem Court, that
previous November, testified that in the Court Chamber in the house of Mr. Gedney, that
Rossamus Jams did attempt with violence, to put his mother out of the chamber.12

At a court meeting of June 1670, Henry Collins, was involved in a case of Lynn
Selectmen vs Edward Richards. 14 Collins was one of the men chosen by the town to lay
out the bounds of the land.15 Richards had assaulted the selectmen of Lynn upon the
town common laying claim to land and defending it by standing upon it.16 Collins
deposed that Richards had fenced in a part of the highway.17

On 25 June 1672, Henry Collins was one of those who signed a petition
against John Hathorne for selling strong waters to the Indians.18 Hathorne was fined
and stopped from keeping an ordinary for a time.19 One third part of the fine was to be
allowed to the petitioners if demanded by them 20 Henry Collins Sr. took the Oath of
Allegiance to the King at the Quarterly Court Meeting of Nov. 1678.21 He was probably
the Henry Collins who was accused by John Davis of Lynn for slanderous, reproachful
speeches and for audacious and uncivil behavior toward Sarah Linsey at her house in
1681.22 Joseph Collins testified that John Davis told him that Joseph's father brought
Sarah, wife of Eleazer Linsey, from Boston and offered her abuse.23

Henry Collins will was dated 10 Feb. 1686 and was probated 31 Mar.

bad time to view land then, etc......37. On 22 Mar 1668 Nicholas Paige & Henry &
John Collins, both of Lynn, in an action concerning six acres of meadowland in Lynn
formerly owned by Capt. Keaynes and purchased by the Collins brothers from Capt.
Marshall, said they would leave it to Jonathan Wade of Nesticke and Robert Rand of
Lynn to settle the price to be paid.38 On 25 June 1672, John Collins also signed a
petition against John Hathorne for selling strong waters to the Indians39 In June of
1673 Henry Collins aged about 42 years and his brother John Collins, aged about 40
years, deposed that they were working at Mr. Ralph King's house when the highway
was being laid out.40 John Collins took the Oath of Allegiance to the King in 1678.41

On 6 Nov. 1663 Robert Rand & wife Elizabeth sold nine acres of land in
Lynn to Henry Collins Jr. and his brother John Collins for the sum of fifty

On 12 Nov. 1666 Alice, widow of Richard Johnson & John Collins
mother-in-law, gave all of her housing and lands to her natural son Samuel
Johnson of Lynn and her son-in-law John Collins of Lynn44

John Collins died about 22 Dec. 1679 at sea intestate. Administration of
his estate was granted to his widow Abigail Collins on 29 June 1680. Inventory of the
estate was taken 27 Mar 1680 by Andrew Mansfield & Ralph King. Among the many
items mentioned in the inventory was the land the house stands upon with the houses &
orchard, 32 acres of land & medow, 4-l/2 acres of medow in Wigwam medow & l/6th
part in the saw mill.45 On 30 June 1680 the widow presented an agreement made by
John's relations with the approval of the eldest son. The agreement named his wife,
twelve children. The widow with her relations desired Abigail Collins, Samuel Collins,
Joseph Collins, Andrew Mansfield, Henry Collins Sr. and Henry Collins Jr. to
divide the estate as follows: the widow to receive all the movable estate plus money and
one third of real property during her lifetime. Two thirds of the land to the two eldest
sons Samuel (Samuel has a good trade as gunsmith) & Joseph Collins equally as
they become of age. The widow was to have use of the property until the two eldest
sons become of age. At her death Samuel & Joseph get the whole estate and are
to pay to their siblings Benjamin, Daniel, Nathaniel, John, Elizabeth, Marye,
Hannah Loes, and Alice Collins, ten pounds each as they become of age. Their sister

Collins 2d was appointed guardian to Alice and Benjamin Collings, children of John
Collings deceased. Nathaniel Ingersoll was appointed guardian to Loice Collings and

John Collings at his decease left many children of which five of them were small and
not capable of making a living. These children were apparently farmed out among the
relations who, with one exception, did not receive any money from the estate of John
Collins as ordered by the court. Henry Collins 2d mentioned that the widow "by gods
