Samuel Dunton & His Family of Reading, Massachusetts

                           First Generation

	1.	SAMUEL DUNTON was born say 1620 in England. He died on 7 Nov 1683 in Reading,
Middlesex Co., MA.82

Samuel Dunton was a resident of Reading, MA in the Year 1644. A Robert
Dunton was also in Reading at this time and was probably related to Samuel,
perhaps his father or brother.83 The printed Vital records of Reading say that Samuel
died in that town on 7 Nov. 1683 but this is in error. It was probably his son Samuel
who died on this date.

In the Year 1652 Samuel Dunton drew 11 acres of land to be laid out on
Woburn line.84 In 1658 he was listed as an inhabitant of Reading
with land on the north side of the Ipswich River.85 His name can be
found on a list of 39 Reading homeowners in 1667.86 In 1672 Samuel
Dunton and his wife were summoned to the Court "for not coming to the publique
worship on God on the Lords day"87. Samuel was again called before the Court in 1674
and convicted "of bringing up his children in a rude, irreligious profane and barbarous
manner, contrary to the word of God and the laws of the Commonwealth." The
selectman were to place the children in service or apprenticeships and if the parents or
children interfered with this edict, they were to be sent to jail.88

Samuel Sr's verbal will was dated the last week in the 12th month 1684.
The document names sons John who received house & lands, livestock and household
times, son Nathaniel received a piece of land, and son Samuel also received land.
Grandson Samuel received a long gun &?? which son John will keep for him until
Samuel is 16 years old. Sons John & Nathaniel, daughters Hannah, Elizabeth, Sarah
& Mary each received a cow or value of a cow, & daughter Ruth to receive two cows
or value thereof.

The settlement of the estate is dated 25 Aug 1702 and among others to whom money etc.
was paid was Thomas Williams, Samuel Potter, Sarah Dunton & Nathaniel Evans
all received a cow. Samuel Dunton, probably grandson, received ?(cannot read) and
