                  DESCENDANTS OF PATRICK FASSETT

                        First Generation

	1.	PATRICK FASSETT was born about 1628 probably in Scotland. He died 7 Nov 1713 AE 85 in Billerica, Middlesex Co., MA and was buried in Old South Cem, Billerica, MA1

Patrick FASSETT, the immigrant ancestor of this line of FASSETTS may have arrived in New England as early as 1652 among the prisoners taken in Oliver CROMWELL's campaign against the Scotch. Patrick's name may be derived from the surname MCPHERSON or MCFASSETT but this is all supposition. His roots have yet to be proved.

Patrick married Sarah_____, ancestry unknown, about 1669. Wyman calls John REYLEY, ROYLLEY, brother-in-law to Patrick FASSETT which implies that Sarah FASSETT was either a REYLEY or sister to John REYLEY's wife.2 I found no proof of this but it could be so.

On 16 June 1663 Patrick Fasset along with Jeremyah Howard witnessed a power of attorney Mary Blanchard of Nodles, Island to Benjamin Thomson of Cambridge.3

Patrick FASSETT was accepted as an inhabitant of Billerica, MA on 2 June 1679. 4 His name appears on a tax list dated 24 Aug. 1688. He is listed as "Patrick FASSIT, 2 pson & estate of 08:05".5 A committee in Billerica in the Year 1694 was directed "to lay out a suphiciant highway through Mrs. Page's land unto the land of Patrick FASSITT, unto the house of Patrick FASSITT; and from thence to the state highway in the most convenient place from Patrick FASSITT's house leading up to Concord Road and from there to Mr. LAINES."6 In
the 1708 land distribution, Patrick FASSITT received 46 acres of land. 7 The same year he was granted 40 more acres.8 The town of Bedford, Mass. was incorporated in 1729 and was taken from the Towns of Concord & Billerica. The 2d lot of 23 acres was a part of land formerly owned by Patrick FASSETT.9

On 14 June 1714 John FASSETT "eldest sonn" of Patrick was appointed
administrator of his father's estate and gave bond of 100 pounds. John presented an accounting of the estate with inventory on 9 Sept. 1714. The estate was inventoried in the amount of 54-13-10. It was divided into ten parts - one share to widow and one share each to nine unnamed children.10

The deed was witnessed by Phineas & Daniel DAVISON and recorded 9 or 19 June 1773 when Samuel & Benjamin personally appeared to acknowledge the document.116

Samuel & Adonijah FASSETT as residents of Winchester, NH signed the
Association Test on 3 June 1776.117 Samuel supposedly operated one of the town's earliest saw mills in Richmond, NH.118Samuel sold the property the saw mill was located on to Ephraim TAFT of Richmond on 13 Mar 1775.119 Bassett also stated that Samuel was a Soldier of the Revolution. I did not find any references for the latter
statement although Samuel would have been of the right age to serve.

The listings for Samuel FASSETT in the 1790 & 1800 New Hampshire Federal Census follow. He was not listed in the 1810 & 1820 census but may have been residing with his son-in-law Amos ADAMS, husband of his daughter Mary.

Samuel FASSETT was a member of the Friends Church (a.k.a. Quakers). The records mentioning Samuel were copied from the microfilm of Richmond New Hampshire Monthly Meetings of Friends at the Rhode Island Historical Society Library at Providence, Rhode Island. Samuel's name appears on a list of Friends who were members of the Richmond Meeting 1792 - 1850. His name does not appear on the list dated 1820 - 1836. Samuel is mentioned in the Richmond
Friend's Meetings as follows:

At monthly meeting held in Richmond, NH 19th of the 5th month 1796: The preparative meeting inform that Samuel FASSET came into that meeting and requested to come under the care of Friends and the appearing in this and continuing the same. Israel SABIN, Jaaz H. BARRETT and Jedediah BUFFUM are appointed to take the matter into serious consideration and have seasonable and solid opportunity with him to discover the motives of his request and the sincerity thereof as also his suitableness to be a member of our Society and
report to our next monthly meeting". At the monthly meeting held at Richmond 23 of the 6th month 1796 Samuel's request was referred one month. At the monthly meeting held at Richmond 21 of the 7th month 1796 "Two of the Committee to visit Samuel FASSET report that they have again visited him and think it may be best that his request be granted and we received him a member accordingly".At the
Richmond Monthly Friend's Meeting on 16th of 4th month 1801 Samuel FASSET & Jaaz BARRETT were involved in the expelling of Daniel TWITCHEL from the Society of Friends.

There was no mention of Samuel's second wife in these records. She may
have been deceased by the time Samuel became a Friend or perhaps did not join this religious group. The 1800 Federal Census shows one female residing in Samuel's household but this could be a daughter.

On 19 Apr. 1776 Samuel FASSET of Uxbridge, MA for the sum of 10 pounds, 10 shillings purchased land in Richmond, NH containing 80 acres and being Lot 20 in the 9th range from Nathan TWITCHELL of Uxbridge.120 On 15 May 1775 Ebenezer JEWELL of Winchester, NH, cordwinder, sold land in that town to Samuel FASSET of Richmond for the sum of 112 pounds - land containing 102-1/2 acres.121
These are but two of the many land transactions involving Samuel FASSETT recorded in Keene, NH. The last deed mentioning Samuel was dated 12 Oct. 1816 when Amos ADAMS of Winchester, NH purchased from Samuel FASSETT of the same place 50 acres of land in Winchester and 30 acres of land in Richmond. The deed was recorded 10 Mar 1830 but Samuel FASSET had appeared on 6 May 1829 and acknowledged the
instrument .122

In 1804 the Townsmen of Winchester, NH complained about their taxes being used for the maintenance of the Meetinghouse. They wanted the town meetinghouse to be divided according to the proportion of taxes paid by each religious sect. On 5 Jan. 1810 Samuel FASSETT, among others, served on a committee to alot to each religious denomination their proportion of the meeting house.123

There is no probate record for Samuel FASSETT in Cheshire County Probate Court in Keene, NH. Most of the early Winchester Vital and Cemetery records were destroyed in a fire. Just prior to this unfortunate event some of the early vital records were printed in NEH&G Registers #37 & #38 but this project was never completed due to destruction of the records. I have been unable to find the name of
Samuel's second wife. Samuel may have married in either New Hampshire or Conn. A search of Barbour Collection, Pomfret source records etc. yielded nothing. The paucity of records in Winchester makes this a difficult area to search.
