public penance and contribute money to the parish poor. 49In July of 1637, Edmund
appeared before an archdeacon of his church "for going to Shaftesbury to church on
Sunday and Holy Days." These disagreements with his church probably played a large
part in Edmund's decision to come to New England.50

he was appointed by the Town of Sudbury to lay out a highway from the Watertown
boundary to Dunster's farm. 55 In 1653 he & Hugh Griffin were given the task of
dividing the "shot and over-plus of bullets" to the inhabitants. 56 In 1666 Edmund

John Goodenow was a Captain in the Sudbury militia and was a prominent
person in the town being often mentioned in the town records. The following
are but a few of the things he was involved in: The people of Sudbury were called to
meeting by the beating of a drum. In 1652 John Goodenow, son of Edmund, beat the
drum twice every lecture day and twice every forenoon and twice upon every Lord’s
day to give notice what time to come to meeting. He was paid 20 shillings for year for
this service.72 In 1654 was discharged from the town’s engagement for this work.73
On 26 Mar 1677 John Goodenow, among others, was granted liberty by the town to
build a saw mill.74 About the Year 1677/78 during the illness of Rev. Edmund Browne,
the town minister, John offered his services to fetch and return preachers from
surrounding towns to conduct church services.75 In 1688 he was one of the keepers of
the town ammunition.76 He was probably the John Goodenow who with Edward
Wright purchased a bell for the second Sudbury Meetinghouse for 25 pounds 77

In 1697 Capt. John was convicted of adultery and was forced to resign from all
offices78 Publicly the Capt. had monopolized town offices and corruptly misued his
power. 79 He cheated at horse trading, been censured for drunkenness by fellow church
members and attended only half the services.80 A complaint was filed "When he is
absent from meeting, the wife of John Brooks is absent also"81 Mary Clap complained
that " Being at John Brooks house during meeting Capt. John Goodenow entered. When
he thought me asleepe he went to the bedside where Goodwife Brooks lay. I did hear
then discorse in such a manner as was not mete for any but a man and his wife. The
wife of John Brooks said that the custom of women was uppon her and that her body
was much swollen. Capt. Goodenow said he hoped not so. Goody Brooks said it is & if
you will not believe me....." 82 Other accusations were made against the Captain.
concerning his behavior with Mrs. Brooks.83

On 1 Aug. 1721 Edmund Goodenow was appointed administrator of his father's
estate. The bond of administration was for 500 pounds and sureties were John
Rice and Hopeful ?. The deceased was referred to as Captain John Goodenow and this
document was witnessed by Joseph Patterson and ??84
