As punishment he was required to do public penance and contribute money to the parish poor. 49In July of 1637, Edmund appeared before an archdeacon of his church "for going to Shaftesbury to church on Sunday and Holy Days." These disagreements with his church probably played a large part in Edmund's decision to come to New England.50 Edmund & Ann, their servant Robert Sanger and Edmund's brothers John & Thomas and his sister Ursula came to New England on the ship CONFIDENCE which sailed from Southampton, England in April of 1638. The following are but a few of the things he was involved in: The people of Sudbury were called to meeting by the beating of a drum. In 1652 John Goodenow, son of Edmund, beat the drum twice every lecture day and twice every forenoon and twice upon every Lord’s day to give notice what time to come to meeting. John Goodenow entered. When he thought me asleepe he went to the bedside where Goodwife Brooks lay. I did hear then discorse in such a manner as was not mete for any but a man and his wife. The wife of John Brooks said that the custom of women was uppon her and that her body was much swollen. Capt. Goodenow said he hoped not so. Goody Brooks said it is & if you will not believe me....." 82 Other accusations were made against the Captain. concerning his behavior with Mrs. Brooks.83 On 1 Aug. 1721 Edmund Goodenow was appointed administrator of his father's estate. The bond of administration was for 500 pounds and sureties were John Rice and Hopeful ?. The deceased was referred to as Captain John Goodenow and this document was witnessed by Joseph Patterson and ??84 Settlement of estate of Capt.
