settled on land which had been promised to the first settled minister of the
township. On 14 Feb. 1769 John appealed to the proprietors of Monadnock for
protection of his rights. John stated, "your petitioner eleven years past
moved into the township called Monadnock No. two in sd grant, for conveniency
of Settlement purchased a house then already built with some improvements Made by Moses Stickney on Lott no. 12 in the ninth Range drawn in the right of the first settled minister." John asked that he be given this lot or another in exchange for it. This did not come to pass and John again petitioned on 15 Mar 1769 stating that he lived on this lot for more than 11 years including about three years by himself without his family. Reuben Kidder investigated the matter and on 21 July 1769 suggested that John Grout give a deed to the proprietors of Lot #4 in the 4th range and 30 acres of the east side of Lot 3 in the 4th range in exchange for Lot #12 in 9 range.
