First Generation
1. JOHN sr HAYDEN was born by about 1600. He died in 1678/1682 in Braintree, MA.
JOHN HAYDEN sr was in Dorchester, MA as early as 1632 when on 16 Jan 1632
he had 16 acres of land granted to him "next to the great lots towards Neponset" and on
1 Dec. 1634 had 8 acres granted to him on Roxbury bounds, also on 17 Apr 1635 had
1-1/2 acres of swamp granted him "betwixt the wolf trap and dead swamp." 1He sold
the land next to Roxbury bounds "before 18 Jan. 1635 and on 18 Mar 1637 had 4 acres
12 rods of land on the neck and 3 acres 1 good 12 rods granted him in the cow pasture.2
John Hayden was a freeman in Dorchester on 14 May 1634.3
JOHN & SUSANNAH HAYDEN removed to Braintree, MA about 1640. As a
resident of Braintree JOHN applied to the General Court in Oct. of 1647 to assist him in
the care of a mentally disabled son Joseph Hayden but was told assistance should come
from his own church and town. In Oct. of 1648 he petitioned the court again and was
allowed five pounds out of the revenue from the tax on wines. In May of 1651 he again
petitioned the court for assistance in the care of his son and the loss of a cow and was
allowed five pounds per year out of the town taxes. In 1653 he received five more
pounds and in 1654 Goodwife Hayden received 50 shillings out of the taxes for the care
of her child. John was allowed five pounds In Oct. 16554
JOHN's Last will and Testament was dated 31 Oct. 1678 and was probated 26
July 1682. The document gives wife Susannah "who hath been my faithful
companion many years" his whole estate except land given to son Ebenezer. Son
Joseph HAYDEN was to be maintained. Son John after death of wife and son
Joseph, "enough to make him equal to his other brethren". After the decease of widow
and son Joseph. the remainder of the estate to be divided among all the children. The
children of deceased son Samuel & deceased daughter Hannah to have a child's
portion among them of estate. John confirms to son Nehemiah one end of the house
etc. Widow SUSANNAH HAYDEN JOSEPH PENNIMAN & SAMUEL
TOMSON were administrators and the document was witnessed by STEPHEN
PAYNE and CHRISTOPHER WEBB.
A document dated 3 Oct 1684 contained information that widow Susannah
was deceased. An inventory of remaining estate left by widow was dated 4 Apr
16955
JOHN HAYDEN married SUSANNAH before 1634/1635. Susannah was born by about
1610. She died before 3 Oct. 16846

JOHN Jr was a member of the Church of Braintree, middle precinct and was
present at the settlement of Rev. SAMUEL NILES' estate in 1711.24.
The Last will & Testament of JOHN Jr is dated 25 May 1718. It mentions
sons JOSEPH, JOHN, & JOSIAH; daughters HANNAH THAYER,
ELIZABETH PRAY, LYDIA VINTON ABIGAIL THAYER. Son JOSEPH who
was executor of the estate received the bulk of the estate and the others inherited five
shillings each25

JOSIAH HAYDEN lived near the west boundary of Sudbury, MA and his name
appears on a list of those opposing dividing the town of Sudbury into two
parishes in the Year 1707.42
JOSIAH's will is dated 8 Nov. 1730 and was probated 21 Dec. 1730. He
called himself yeoman and mentions his "well beloved wife Elizabeth"; daughters
ELIZABETH, ABIGAIL, & RUTH; sons NATHANIEL (called youngest),
PHINEAS, ELISHA, JOHN, EDMUND, JOSIAH, EBENEZER & URIAH.
JOSIAH's wife ELIZABETH and son NATHANIEL HAYDEN were the executors of
the estate and the document was witnessed by BENJAMIN PARMENTER, SILAS
MOORE & JOHN EVELITH.43

LYDIA GAY, on 6 Apr 1727 in Hopkinton, MA.51 LYDIA was born on 13 Nov 1710 in
Sherborn, Ma.52 She died in 1765 in Hopkinton, Middlesex Co., MA.
LYDIA HAYDEN's Last will & testament is dated 15 July 1765 and was proved
7 Oct. 1765. LYDIA stated that she was administratrix of the estate of her
late husband ELISHA HAYDEN and part of his personal estate is still remaining
and some of their children have received their full part and some have not.
LYDIA mentioned her children ELISHA, ELIAS, MOSES, DANIEL,
HEZEKIAH, BEULAH,LYDIA, ABIGAIL, MARY, RACHEL & RUTH, each of
them receiving sums of money. She left her bed and furniture, wearing apparel, two
gold rings, jewels and gold necklace, pewter to her daughters. Her trusty friend John
NUTT was executor of the estate and the will was witnessed by John CODY, Isaac
LOVING & Daniel LOVING.53

An Ebenezer Hayward of Sudbury, Mass. is listed in the 1771 Direct Tax for the State
of Mass.This is probably Ebenezer (4) as there were no others by this name taxed this
year. It is of course possible that he either signed over his property to his children or left
the State.

Elias HAYDEN lived in Hopkinton, MA for many years and all of his children
were born there. In the 1771 Direct Tax List for Mass. Elias' taxable property is listed
"no polls rateable; no land or house; 6 goats/sheep. Elias had probably sold his property
before moving to the Town of Sutton, MA. Dr. HAYDEN was a member of the First
Church in Sutton (Congregational) in the Year 1772 being admitted by letter -
membership terminated, no date given.108

In 1798 Elias & A. Hayden, E & A. Hayden of Sutton, MA were assessed for one
dwelling house, value of land $40 50 acres included in valuation;the valuation as
determined by principal asssessor including dwelling houses not ecxceeding $100
$465.00,valuation by the commissioner $588,50; whole valuation of lands belonging to
or possessed by one person: $588.50. 109
On 10 Dec. 1790 Elias HAYDEN, Dr. of Sutton and Mrs. Lydia SHEFFIELD of
Hopkinton posted their intentions to marry. This marriage afterwards forbidden by both
parties". 110
The History of Sutton, MA says that Elias HAYDEN's house was
burned down by his insane wife. I wrote to the Sutton Public Library on this
and received the following reply, "The only reference we can find to the fire
is in the history, and as you say it does not give a date. In talking to local historians,
they say that the fact of the doctor's wife burning down the house has always been a
rumor, and cannot be verified. The house did burn but that may or may not be the
cause. The year is also impossible to find.111

twenty-eighth day of December Anno domini 1797. I, Elias HAYDEN of Sutton in the
County of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, freeman calling to mind the
mortality of my Body and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, and being
now in health and of sound mind and memory do constitute, appoint and ordain the
following as my last will and testament - llu - I do resign my soul to God that gave it
and my body to the dust to be buried with decent Christian Burial not doubting but that
I shall at the last day receive my body again by the power of God nextly as ___my
outward estate I devise thereof in manner and form as followith......
2dly - My will is that my funeral charges & likewise all my just debts be
paid by my executor out of my estate....
3rdly - My will is that my well beloved wife Hannah HAYDEN if she survives me
my widow have the improvement of one-third of my Real estate of which I die
seized, during her natural life, likewise all the household furniture she the
said wife brought me on my marriage (cannot read next line) during her natural life, also
one cow to be hers, her heirs and assigns forever..
4thly - My will is to give my son JOEL HAYDEN fifty dollars to be paid by my
son Asa HAYDEN one-half in two years and other other half in four years after
my decease, also one-third of my wearing apparel to him, his heirs and assigns forever.
5thly - My will is to give the whole of my real and personal estate except
the improvement of the widow's dower above mentioned to my son ASA HAYDEN
upon his paying all my just debts and funeral charges and all the bequeathed in this will.
6thly - My will is to give my son MOSES HAYDEN five dollars to be paid by my
son ASA HAYDEN in two years after my decease - the reason why I give my son
MOSES no more is that he my son MOSES has sold his share to my estate to my son
ASA who has received his pay.
7thly - My will is that my daughter LOIS have forty dollars paid her out of
my Estate by my son ASA HAYDEN to be paid in three years after my decease,
likewise the one-half of her own mother's Household furniture left at my
decease; also the one-half of my present wife's household furniture which she
has at her decease to be hers forever.
8thly - My will is to give my Daughter LYDIA BANCROFT ten dollars to be paid
out of my estate by my son ASA HAYDEN in two years after my decease, likewise
the one-half of her own Mother's household furniture left at my decease, also
the one-half of my present wife's household furniture which she leaves at her
decease to be hers forever.

Aug. 1832 for his pension. He died in Lee 11 Feb. 1842. JOEL had married JEMIMA
NUGENT 3 or 5 Dec. 1782 at Sutton, MA. Widow had applied for pension 8 Aug.
