Dr. Elias Hayden of Hopkinton Massachusetts, His Ancestry and Descendants First Generation 1. JOHN sr HAYDEN was born by about 1600. He died in 1678/1682 in Braintree, MA. JOHN HAYDEN sr was in Dorchester, MA as early as 1632 when on 16 Jan 1632 he had 16 acres of land granted to him "next to the great lots towards Neponset" and on 1 Dec. 1634 had 8 acres granted to him on Roxbury bounds, also on 17 Apr 1635 had 1-1/2 acres of swamp granted him "betwixt the wolf trap and dead swamp." 1He sold the land next to Roxbury bounds "before 18 Jan. 1635 and on 18 Mar 1637 had 4 acres 12 rods of land on the neck and 3 acres 1 good 12 rods granted him in the cow pasture.2 John Hayden was a freeman in Dorchester on 14 May 1634.3 JOHN & SUSANNAH HAYDEN removed to Braintree, MA about 1640. As a resident of Braintree JOHN applied to the General Court in Oct. of 1647 to assist him in the care of a mentally disabled son Joseph Hayden but was told assistance should come from his own church and town. In Oct. of 1648 he petitioned the court again and was allowed five pounds out of the revenue from the tax on wines. In May of 1651 he again petitioned the court for assistance in the care of his son and the loss of a cow and was allowed five pounds per year out of the town taxes. In 1653 he received five more pounds and in 1654 Goodwife Hayden received 50 shillings out of the taxes for the care of her child. John was allowed five pounds In Oct. 16554 JOHN's Last will and Testament was dated 31 Oct. 1678 and was probated 26 July 1682. The document gives wife Susannah "who hath been my faithful companion many years" his whole estate except land given to son Ebenezer. Son Joseph HAYDEN was to be maintained. Son John after death of wife and son Joseph, "enough to make him equal to his other brethren". After the decease of widow and son Joseph. the remainder of the estate to be divided among all the children. The children of deceased son Samuel & deceased daughter Hannah to have a child's portion among them of estate. John confirms to son Nehemiah one end of the house etc. Widow SUSANNAH HAYDEN JOSEPH PENNIMAN & SAMUEL TOMSON were administrators and the document was witnessed by STEPHEN PAYNE and CHRISTOPHER WEBB. A document dated 3 Oct 1684 contained information that widow Susannah was deceased. An inventory of remaining estate left by widow was dated 4 Apr 16955 JOHN HAYDEN married SUSANNAH before 1634/1635. I wrote to the Sutton Public Library on this and received the following reply, "The only reference we can find to the fire is in the history, and as you say it does not give a date. In talking to local historians, they say that the fact of the doctor's wife burning down the house has always been a rumor, and cannot be verified. The house did burn but that may or may not be the cause.
