First Generation
1. FRANCIS KENDALL was born about 1620 in England. He died in 1708, ae 88 in Woburn, Middlesex Co., MA.(1)
Francis and Thomas Kendall (alias Miles) may be the sons of JOHN &
ELIZABETH KENDALL of England. This brief genealogy of the descendants of
Francis Kendall does not deal with his English ancestry.
The Kendall brothers first appeared in New England in the year 1640 in
Charlestown, MA. Francis eventually settled in Woburn, Mass. and Thomas in Reading, MA.
Francis Kendall was born c1620 having deposed in Dec. 1658, age about 38
years and 2 (2) 1662 as about 48 years.(2)
Francis was an original proprietor of the Town of Woburn, Mass.(3) He was in
Charlestown, Mass. in 1640 when he subscribed to the Town Orders for Woburn.(4)
He served the Town of Woburn as selectman and committeeman for many years.(5)
In the Year 1675 Francis Kendall is released from all "Ordinary Traynings".(6) In 1664 Francis served on a committee to divide the common land in Woburn (7) and one year he was fined six pence for "being mere an hour to late" for meeting.(8) On 9 June 1676 he was chosen tythingman for the Town of Woburn (9)and on 19 Dec. 1671 he refused communion with the Church of Woburn.(10)
In the Year 1700 Francis Kendall was involved in a court case regarding
the estate of his son-in-law Ephraim Winship of Cambridge, Mass. The record is most interesting and reads as follows: "Ephraim WINSHIP, late of Cambridge
ffarms, dec'd Ye 19 of Oct. 1696 & adminx being granted to Eliza; ye Relict
widow of sd Ephraim WINSHIP, who afterwards married with Joseph Peirce of
Watertown, who after his Marriage with ye sd admistrix proceeded to a further
admistn as to paying debts &c. His Hond ffather in law mr ffrances Kendall at Woburne demands that his son in law Ephraim WINSHIP in the time of the former War called Phillppe War came to his hous for shelter for fear of the Indians, because his living was then in ye woods Remote from Neighbors, and he brought with him his Antient mother in law Reigner a widow of whom he was to take care & that ye sd ffrancis Kendall did keep ye sd widow Reigner for sd Ephraim Winship with provisions more yrs A yeare and halfe and halfe at Eight pounds per
Yeare & halfe comes to 121b." Widow Reigner was Mary, widow of Samuel Reyner.
In this same case Francis Kendall made a statement dated 20 Feb. 1700
which reads, "What I give in my will is of nothing worth til I am dead. yet is an antient law, as ould as paul he teaches us so much law -- now it hath pleased God to lengten out my life for more yn Eighty years, much longer yn I

Francis Kendall's will is dated 9 May 1706 and was probated 31 May 1708
The will names as the heirs of Francis the following: eldest son John KENDAL; sons Thomas, Samuel, Jacob KENDALL; daus. Mary READ (son-in-law Israel READ), Elizabeth PEIRCE, Hannah GREEN; children of deceased dau. Rebecca EATON; daughters Abigail PEIRCE; Eunice, wife of son John KENDALL; grandsons Francis KENDAL, eldest son of son John KENDAL, Ralph KENDAL, son of son Thomas KENDAL, Francis GREEN, Samuel, son of son Samuel KENDAL, Jacob son of son Jacob KENDAL, William PEARCE; granddaughters Mary PEIRCE & Elizabeth LAMSON, dau. of my dau. Rebecca EATON; the eight children of my brother Thomas KENDAL. The document also mentions: Samuel WALKER, Samuel BLODGETT, Thomas CARTER, Jonathan THOMPSON, Joseph WRIGHT Sr., John KNIGHT, John BRUCE, Timothy WALKER (these for the most part mentioned in reference to land boundries). The executors of the estate were sons John & Thomas KENDAL - OVERSEERS - Jeremiah SWAYN of Reading, MA & James FOWLE of Wobourne, MA. Witnesses were John BROOKS, Daniel BALDWIN & Edward WINN (12)

Samuel Kendall was a carpenter by trade. He received the commission of
lieutenant from Gov. Belcher in 1732. He was an original proprietor of
Townsend, Mass. and became involved in a controversy with the heirs of Major
Hawthrome Horne of Salem who claimed a portion of the lands in that town under a
previous grant from the General Court. In 1725/26 was a constable and tax
collector in Woburn. (78)
Samuel Kendall was an original grantee of Athol, MA. and contracted for
the first grist mill and saw mill there. Although Samuel owned land in Athol
it is thought that he never lived there.(79)

31. JESSE KENDALL (SAMUEL, THOMAS, FRANCIS) was born on 15 May 1727 in Woburn, Middlesex Co., MA. He died 14 Apr 1797 in 70th Year in Petersham, Worcester Co., MA and was buried in Pleasant St. Cem, Athol, MA.(118)
Jesse KENDALL Sr. dug the first canal in Athol, MA and built the first corn
mill there. He was interested in water power projects and was the Deacon of
the First Church of the Town. (119) At a town meeting held in Athol 9 Apr. 1778 a committee consisting of John Haven, Aaron Smith and Jesse Kindal were chosen to supply the Continental soldier's families with the necessaries of life according to the act of contract.(120)

Jesse was issued an inn holder's license in 1784 but there is no record of
an inn owned by him in the Athol town records. On 30 Mar 1795 Jesse conveyed
80 acres of land to Simion W. Fish of Mendon. The land was between Miller's
River on the southwest and the south bank of the canal and the mill pond on the south. (122)

The administration of Jesse Kendall's estate was granted to Joel Kendall
on 18 May 1797. Joel Kendall & Thomas Stratton both of Athol and Paul Kendall of Templeton gave bond in the amount of $2000. Jesse Kendall Jr. and
widow Elizabeth Kendall refused the administration of the estate on 17 May
1797. Paul Kendall Thomas Stratton and Jonathan Sanderson took an inventory of the estate on 13 May 1797. The estate was appraised at $3329.81. Jesse's real estate holdings are listed as follows:
The homestead of said deceased situated in said Petersham containing 58
acres with the buildings thereon $1435.00.
20 acres of woodland lying in the south part of Athol in sd county of
Worcester at $150.00
Also one half of a pasture lying in common and undivided in sd Athol the
whole containing about 28 acres at $140.00
Also 100 acre lot lying in said Athol of wild land $450.00
Also about 7 acres lying in Athol after said joining on Miller's River
where the Mill Brook so called emptieth to said River.
Also about 2 acres lying in said Athol joining on the south side of Simion
Fish's Mill pond and on the north line of Joel Kendall's lands at $12.00.
Also a hundred acre lot be it more or less lying in Royalston in sd County
of Worcester at $600.00.
One of Jesse's personal assets was one pew in the Meetinghouse in Athol
valued at $20.00. On 18 May widow Elizabeth Kendall was paid $30.00 to "enable her and support life" (123)

John Tidd's will is dated 9 (2 mo) 1656. The will was entered and recorded 10 (9m) 1656. John left his wife Alice the use of the house and land until she remarries or dies. The property is then to be divided among John's three grandchildren namely Benjamin & Hannah Savell and "my sonne Samuel's daughter. Grandchildren John and Samuel Savell each received 20 shillings. John's two daughters Mary and Elizabeth were appointed executors of the estate. The will was witnessed by Edward Johnson. A memorandum to the will was added leaving son John Tidd five pounds to be paid within two years after John Sr.'s decease by executrixes. Son Savell shall keep the grandchildren's portions until they come of age including son Samuel's daughter's share. Grandchildren Thomas Fuller and John Kendall were left 16 acres of land lately purchased from Thomas Chamberline to be equally divided between them plus a parcel of meadowland. Thomas Blodgeett settled in Cambridge, MA where he was a freeman in 1636 and was granted land on 6 Mar 1626/7 (224) According to the proprietor records of Cambridge, Thomas was given by the town, in the west field, two acres of planting ground; one house lot upon the cow common and he purchased (among other parcels) of Jonas Aufen two acres of planting ground in the west end of the town .(25)
