DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM MAHAR and MARGARET BREEN
                   OF ALBANY, NEW YORK

1. WILLIAM1 MAHAR, born abt. 1817 in Ireland; died 5 Jul 1877, ae 60 in Albany,
Albany Co., NY1; buried in Calvary Cem., Albany, NY.2 He married on 25 Nov 1852 in
Albany, NY3, MARGARET BREEN, born abt. 1832 in Ireland.

William Maher probably came to the US about 1848, one of the peak years of the
potato famine in Ireland. An unknown disease attacked the staple crop inflicting
starvation and related miseries upon the Irish people. Many Irishers were forced to
leave their homes and settle in other countries.

I have been unable to ascertain where in Ireland William Maher came from. The
surname Maher is very common in Co. Tipperary and many Maher families in Albany &
Rensselaer Counties seem to hail from this county. Co. Tipperary was one of the
hardest hit by the famine. Almost 70,000 people died in Co. Tipperary during the
famine years. It is estimated that about 190,000 people emigrated from Tipperary
between 1841 & 1891. Perhaps William Maher was one of them.

William was a tailor by occupation. The first Albany City Directory in which
he appears is 1852 when William resided at 131 Canal St. He was the only William
Mahar/Maher in this directory. According to the 1855 census William had been living in
Albany for seven years which would have brought him into the city c1848. The Canal
St. area of the city was one of the worst slums in town and was nicknamed Gander
Bay4. William was no doubt very poor and had to fight many adversities in his early
years as a resident of Albany.

William was probably the William Maher who declared his intentions to be
naturalized and who was naturalized on 23 Oct. 1852. The only information given on
this record was that William was born in Ireland and was a resident of the City of
Albany The document was witnessed by William Dwyer. One Ann Dwyer, wife of
William was a witness to the bapt of William Mahar Jr. in 18655

William owned no property. He probably conducted his tailoring business out of his
flat. Neither William or his wife Margaret left a will no doubt because their worldly
assets were minimal.

According to the 1865 census 6 Margaret Mahar was the mother of eight children. I
found records of only five. The other three probably died young.

Margaret Breen may have come from Ireland to Albany as a domestic. She came to
Albany about 1850.7 Margaret was living in 1875 when she was enumerated with her
family in the census of that year. She was not listed with her family in the 1880 census.
She probably died between 1875 & 1880. There is no death certificate for her at
Albany Dept. of Vital Statistics. A search of Albany newspapers 1875-1880 did not
yield a death notice nor is there a burial record for her at Calvary cemetery where her
husband is buried.
