England. He died in Boston, MA between 17 Feb. 1665/6 when he wrote his will and 28

Billerica, Middlesex Co., MA.34

Jesse Manning was a soldier of the Revolution having marched on the
Lexington alarm 19 Apr. 1775 under Capt. Pollard in Col. Greene's Regiment.35

Jesse Manning Sr.’s will was lodged 15 Nov. 1825.  He mentions his wife
Abigail, his daughter Julia Knapp and granddaughter Elizabeth M. Knapp.  He left
his son Jesse one half of his wearing apparel with what he had already given him was
his equal share of the estate.  The executor was his grandson Jesse, son of Jesse
Manning Jr. and was given the rest of the wearing apparel and the real estate of
deceased.36

	43.	JESSE Jr. MANNING (JESSE Sr., JACOB, WILLIAM, SAMUEL,
WILLIAM, WILLIAM Sr.) was born on 12 Jul 1776 in Billerica, Middlesex Co., MA.
He died on 28 Jul 1852 in Paxton, Worcester Co., MA.48 

Jesse Manning resided in Billerica, Mass. and Sutton & Brookline, NH in the early part
of his life.  He eventually removed to Paxton, MA. Jesse was engaged in the lumber
business in New Hampshire and ran a mill.49

On  22 Dec. 1847 Jesse Manning, carpenter, of Paxton, sold land in that
town to  David Manning of the same place, deed recorded 29 Feb. 1848 50  Jesse
Manning & his wife Cynthia of Paxton, MA sold land on 9 Dec. 1847 to John Holden

	48.	DAVID MANNING (JESSE Jr., JESSE Sr., JACOB, WILLIAM, SAMUEL,
WILLIAM, WILLIAM Sr.) was born on 14 Apr 1812 in Sutton, Merrimack Co., NH. He
died on 15 Apr 1890 in Worcester, Worcester Co., MA.108

The following is the obituary for David Manning as published in the Worcester
Evening Gazette 15 Apr. 1890, Page 5:

The many friends of David Manning Senior, will be pained to hear of his
death which occurred at his home No. 9 Ashland Street at 8:40 this morning.  He had
been confined to the house since last August and the end seemed to be due to a general 
breaking down of the system.

Mr. Manning was born in Sutton, New Hampshire, 78 years ago yesterday.  He
came to Paxton as a boy of 15 or thereabouts and went into the boot and
shoe shop of Lakin and Bigelow.  He learned the business with this firm and at the age
of 25 started a factory of his own and had a successful business career.  Later he was in
the same business in Leicester and Worcester.  He came to this city in 1847, and his
shop for a long time was on Pleasant Street, just where Rogers Block now stands, 
and afterwards across the street in Taylor's brick building.  He retired from business in
1875 and has since lived quietly  here.  He was married to his present wife 52 years ago
in Paxton.  She was Miss Lucy B. Grosvenor, daughter of Jonathan Grosevenor Esq.
who was one of the leaders of the town, a large farmer and one whose judgment was
consulted by his fellow townsman in business matters.  Two years ago Mr. & Mrs.
Manning celebrated their golden wedding and their children and grandchildren
assembled to wish them happiness.

Mr. Manning was a man of strong convictions and was a pronounced
anti-slavery man.  He was one of the original Free Soilers and later he was a
Republican, but his strong feeling in the temperance cause led him to join the third party
a few years since.  He was a familiar figure at the polls and for several years he had
distributed Probition ballots to show his interest in the cause. He has been a member of
the Union Church for a great many years joining it during the pastorate of the Rev. Dr.
Smalley, father of George W.Smalley.

Mr. Manning leaves a widow and six children of whom one is Mrs. J.A. Titus
The others are George G. and Theodore who form the firm of Manning Brothers,
wholesale boot and shoe dealers.  David Manning Jr. well known in local politics and
at the bar; C. Walter and Joseph A. who are in the wholesale and shoe business in
Boston.
