Descendants of CORNELIS MATTHYSSEN and BARENTJE DIRCKS

1. CORNELIS1 MATTHYSSEN, born in Stockholm, Sweden say 1637. He married on 26 Feb 1661 in Dutch Ref. Ch., New Amsterdam, NY1 BARENTJE DIRCKS of Meppel, Holland born say 1640.

The given name Cornelis is Niels in Swedish His children in later generations were known as Cornellissen/zen which means son of Cornelius.

Cornelis Matthyssen came to colonial New York about 1658.2 Cornelius was one of the founders of Harlem, NY where he was a carpenter & timber-hewer.3 Cornelius was the first tenant of the land since known as the "Church Farm" from which he cut and cleared the primeval forest trees.4 On his lease expiring in 1668, he left the town and bought a small place at Hellgate, Newtowne, being also an applicant in 1673, for Patrey's Hook "lying between Col. Morris and the two brothers".5 He sold out at Hellgate to Thomas LAWRENCE, and obtained a grant of sixty acres at Turtle Bay in 1776. This he sold to Joh PIETERSEN - date not given - and perhaps went to Hackensack (as did his family after 1681 when he is last named in New York.".6

On 12 Aug 1658 MATTHYSEN sued Cornelius JANZEN, a woodsawyer for the sum of fl 128.4 balance. Mr. JANZEN denied that he owed so much and accused Cornelius of being "a thief, saying he stole a crowbar from the General and sold it to little Abramje; moreover, advised him to steal his timber from the General and sell it; offering to prove it". On 7 November, Cornelius obtained judgment
against Janzen.7

In November of 1664, Cornelius started suit against Denye ISAACKSEN claiming that he bargained with him for timber for 55 guilders and he demanded half of this. ISAACKSEN claimed that he bargained for this timber with Skipper Claas GANGELOFZEN VISSER and had spoken to him about it. He further stated that MATTHYSEN had not delivered the wood in the right measure at the proper time. The
court appointed two men to arbitrate the case.8

On 12 June 1666 Cornelius was nominated by the inhabitants of New Harlem for the post of Overseer and was elected by the Court of New York to serve one year. This Court had jurisdiction for cases up to fl 200.9

On 22 Sept 1668 MATTHYSEN and two others, in a petition, requested to Court to appoint them and a fourth person to take the estate of Hage BRUYNSEN, of Sweden as the three petitioners were next of kin to the deceased. The petition was granted.10 Barentje MATTHYSEN's sister Egbertie was married to one Hage BRUYNSEN.11
