DESCENDANTS OF BERNARD SR. MURPHY and BRIDGET MULLEN COUNTY LONGFORD TO ALBANY, NEW YORK

1. Bernard Sr.1 MURPHY, born in Ireland. He married in Ireland, BRIDGET MULLEN,
born in Ireland.

Bernard Murphy lived in Co. Longford, Ireland and never came to the United States.
He no doubt had other children who remained in Ireland besides his sons Bernard &
Patrick who came to America

Bernard1 and his family lived in or around the Town of Newton-Forbes or Village
of Balligh, Clongesh Parish. This Parish is situated on the road from Longford to
Carrock -on-Shannon. Newton-Forbes is now a post town located 61 miles north west
from Dublin. An unknown disease attacked the staple potato crop in 1845 - 1851 and
inflicted starvation and related miseries on the Irish people and caused many to seek
homes elsewhere. The population of County Longford which was 115,000 in 1841 had
fallen 29% in 1851. Over 14,000 Longford people died between 1845 and 1850 of
starvation and disease.1 This is no doubt why Bernard’s sons immigrated to the City of
Albany, NY. In the City of Albany alone from 1830 to 1855, the Irish population of 2000
grew to more than 23,000 persons. In 1855, 40% of Albanians were of Irish extraction.2

Children of Bernard Sr. MURPHY and BRIDGET MULLEN (probably not complete)
+	2	i	BERNARD2 MURPHY, born abt. 1815 in Co. Longford, Clongesh,
Ireland. He married BRIDGET FARRELL.
+	3	ii	PATRICK2 MURPHY, born abt. 1821 in Co. Longford, Ireland. He
married CATHERINE DALY.

                         Generation 2

2. BERNARD2 MURPHY (Bernard Sr.1), born abt. 1807 in Co. Longford, Clongesh,
Ireland perhaps in or near the Town of Newton Forbes or Village of Ballagh (the area
where his son John F. Murphy was born in 18423) Bernard died 24 Jun 1889, ae 74 in
Albany, Albany Co., NY; buried in St. Agnes Cem., Albany, NY age 74 and Murphy
Bible Record, age 82 I feel the Bible Record is correct. 4 Bernard’s age conflicts in all
records I have seen. He married say 1830 in Ireland, BRIDGET FARRELL, born abt.
1808 in Co. Longford, Ireland; died 2 Jan 1878, age 69, Albany, Albany Co., NY; buried
in St. Mary's Cem.

The Clongesh Parish records extant from the year 1829 were searched at the
Family History Library for records of the Bernard Murphy Family. These records reflect
two baptisms for a Bryan & Bridget (Farrell) Murphy of the Village of Ballagh which is
located near the Town of Newton-Forbes. A Jacobus (Latin for James) was baptized on
14 May 1833 and a Margarita was baptized 26 May 1837. Bryan could be a nickname
for Bernard but this is only supposition. There are no other baptismal records in this
parish for Bernard & Bridget's other known children. There is a letter in the pension file
of John F. Murphy dated 16 Sept 1913 in which he states "I cannot furnish a public or
church record of birth. I wrote to the priest in charge of the church in the Village of
Newton-Forbes, County Longford, Ireland some years ago and he could not give it as
all records had been destroyed by fire some years before." This statement is not
absolutely true as many of the records for this parish have been filmed by the LDS
Church.

The pension record of John F. Murphy, son of Bernard & Bridget (Farrell) Murphy says
that Bernard came to the US in the Year 1849 and Bridget in 1850. Bernard may be the
Barnard Murphy, age 35, laborer, who sailed from Liverpool, England on the ship
Andrew Foster arriving New York City from Liverpool on 11 Jan 1850.5

Bridget Murphy, ae 35, came to the US on the ship Marmion arriving NYC from
Liverpool on 12 July 1850. She was accompanied by James Murphy, ae 10, Rose
Murphy, age 8, Patrick Murphy age 4 and Bernard Murphy age 1 year 6 months.6

Bernard Murphy filed his intentions to become a US citizen at Albany, NY on 25
Oct. 1854. He was 40 years old, born Co. Longford, Ireland and embarked from Port of
Liverpool, England with Albany, NY as his destination. The document was witnessed
by Michael Colligan.7 Bernard was naturalized 25 Oct.1856.8 He probably chose
Albany as his destination because his brother Patrick Murphy and/or other members of
the family resided there.

Bernard's occupation according to various Albany City Directories and census' was
laborer. He resided on Orange St., Sherman St. & Elizabeth St. at various times of his
life. In the early Albany City Directories he is called Barney. Barney owned no property
or left no last Will & Testament.

According to the 1865 State Census of Albany Bernard & Bridget Murphy were the
parents of eleven children.9 Only seven children were mentioned in the various census
enumerations in the Murphy Family unit but others could have died young perhaps
before the family came to America.

No office burial records exist at St. Agnes Cem. in Menands for any of Bernard
Murphy's children except John F. Murphy. The others were probably interred in St.
Mary's Cem. in Albany. A search was made of the Albany Daily Times Newspaper from
1875 to 1880 to find the deaths of the other Murphy children. Some time after this was
done a Murphy Family Bible Record came to light. In 1972 this Bible was owned by
Mrs. Dolna Burby of Pittsburgh, PA the wife of William W. Burby, a grandson of John F.
Murphy. This Bible gave the death dates of Bernard, Bridget, Thomas & Bernard V.
Murphy among others. Dolna Burby is now deceased and the whereabouts of the Bible
is unknown.

Bridget's age conflicts in various records. There is no official death certificate for
her at Albany Dept. of Vital Statistics where the records start about 1870.

Bridget's death notice calls her Bridget Farrell, age 69, wife of Bernard Murphy and
mother of James, Michael and John F. Murphy. Her funeral took place at the home of
the latter at the corner of Elizabeth & Osborn Streets.10

Bridget was probably buried in St. Mary's Cem. located at So. Main and Partridge St
reets in Albany. Burials in this cemetery were discontinued in the middle 1900s and the
grounds converted to other building projects. Those buried here were re-interred in
other cemeteries mainly in St. Agnes Cem., Menands, NY. The office records from St.
Marys were supposedly interfiled with those of St. Agnes Cem. in the office of the latter
place but many are missing including Bridgets and other members of her family.

Bridget Murphy had a brother Michael Farrell who was living in Co. Longford in
1850. Farrell is a very common surname in the records of Clongesh Parish.11

25 Jul 1877 in Albany, Albany Co., NY. Patrick's death notice says
he was age 32 and mentions his father Bernard, his brothers James,
John & Michael Murphy, member of GAR Post 5.16 He may have
been the Patrick who enlisted in the 7th NY Heavy Artillery on 23 Feb
1864, age 18 to serve three years He enlisted in Co. A. in the City
of Albany and was discharged 01 Aug 1865 in Baltimore, MD.17

in his mother's obit but not mentioned in obit of nephew John Murphy
who died 19 Sept.1878 as his brothers were.

3. PATRICK2 MURPHY (Bernard Sr.), born abt. 1821 in Co. Longford, Ireland; died 11
Feb 1869 Ae 48 in Albany, Albany Co., NY; buried in St. Agnes Cem., Menands,
Albany Co., NY.20 He married say 1844, CATHERINE DALY, born abt. 1818/19
(calculated gs) in Ireland; died 18 Oct. 1903, Ae 84 in Albany, Ny; buried in St. Agnes
Cem.21

Patrick Murphy came to Albany c1841 and his wife Catherine probably arrived
about the same time. Patrick was a grocer and liquor store proprietor in the city. Family
tradition says that Patrick manufactured Irish whiskey in the basement of his business
which may or may not be true.

The first identifiable listing in the Albany City Directories for Patrick was in 1847/48
when Patrick Murphy, grocer resided on the corner of Broad and Elizabeth Streets. In
1850-51 he was located at the corner of Schuyler and Alexander Streets and from
1852-1854 he lived on the corner of Rensselaer & Franklin Streets. On 7 July 1854
Patrick purchased a lot on the south corner of Eagle and Ferry Streets from Cornelius &
Ann McCloskey.22 He operated his grocery store from the Eagle St. address until his
death in 1869. From 1858 until 1861, Patrick operated a retail liquor business in
addition to his grocery. The liquor store was located at 29 So. Pearl St. where Patrick
was in partnership with James Hart. The store was called Hart & Murphy.

There were numerous Patrick Murphys naturalized in Albany County prior to 1855.
None of these records mentioned Co. Longford, Ireland therefore I was unable to
determine which record if any fit the Patrick Murphy in question.

Patrick Murphy wrote his Last will and testament on 12 Jan. 1869, proved 14 Mar
1869. He left all of his property, both real and personal, to his beloved wife Catherine
Murphy who was his executrix. The will mentions property located on south west
corner of Eagle St. & Myrtle Ave. Witnesses to the will were V.L.Osborn & Arthur
Boyle.23

Catherine Murphy's will was written 13 June 1903 and probated 15 Nov. 1903.
She left the bulk of her estate to her daughters Mary Jane Browne and Anna G.M.
Feeney and her grandson John B. Murphy. Catherine left legacies to her other two
grandsons David J. & Matthew Browne as well as $1000 to her live-in companion
Rose Murphy, niece-in-law. James Feeney was named executor and the will was
witnessed by Peter Reynolds and Foster Pruyn.24

One Mary Murphy, age 17, born Ireland was residing with the Patrick Murphy family
in 1850. Mary was not living in Patrick's household in the 1855 census. She might
have been a cousin or even a younger sister of Bernard & Patrick but this is
conjectural. In the Clongesh Parish records, Co. Longford Ireland, I find a Maria
Murphy baptized 4 Sept. 1832 daughter of Jacobi & Margarita (Kenny) Murphy, SP:
Patrickus Murphy/Margaret Mulhurn. This could or could not be significant. A Mary
Murphy served as a sponsor for the baptism of Mary E.Murphy, dau. of James & Mary
(Thompson) Murphy in 1863.

The 1900 census says that Catherine Murphy was the mother of seven children,
three living at that time.25

4. THOMAS3 MURPHY (BERNARD2, Bernard Sr.1), born c6 Feb 1831 (calculated obit)
in Co. Longford, Ireland; died 19 Jun 1872 in Albany, Albany Co., NY, ae 41-4-13.32
He married abt. 1863, MARGARET HAYES, born abt. 1835 in Ireland; died 6 Jan 1910,
Ae 70 in Albany, Ny.33

Thomas Murphy declared his intentions to become a US citizen on 20 Oct 1856 He
was born, according to this record, in Co. Longford Ireland, was age 23, embarked at
the Port of Liverpool, England with Albany,NY as his destination34 Thomas was
naturalized 21 Oct 1858 with B. Murphy (prob. his father) as witness.35

Thomas may have come from Ireland with his brother John F.in 1853. Like so
many of his Irish contemporaries he worked as an unskilled laborer in the City of
Albany.

Thomas Murphy's death notice names his father Bernard Murphy, his sons John &
William (step-sons) and his brothers James, John, Patrick, B.V. and Michael Murphy.36

Typically for the Irish Margaret's age is also conflicting depending upon what record
one looks at. According to the 1900 census Margaret was the mother of ten children,
six living at that time. Margaret was the widow of John Sullivan, a cooper by
occupation who died about 1861. Her children by John Sullivan were37: i. William bc
1853/54, ii. John F. b. 5 Apr 1852, bap. 30 Apr 185238, d. 20 Sept. 1920 Albany, NY39,

8. JAMES H.3 MURPHY (BERNARD2, Bernard Sr.), may have been the one born in
Conglesh Parish Co. Longford, Ireland on 14 May 1833 to Bryan & Bridget (Farrell)
Murphy, died 11 Nov 1903 in Albany, Albany Co., NY; buried in St. Mary's Cem.,
Albany, NY.58 He married on 2 Jan 1859 in Albany, NY, St. Mary's Ch., MARY
THOMPSON59, born abt. 1837 in Cury, Kilcommick, Longford, Ireland; died 22 Aug
1874 in Albany, Albany Co., NY; buried in Albany, NY, St. Mary's Cem., daughter of
BERNARD THOMPSON and MARY McANERNEY.60

James' age like those of his parents conflict in every record I have seen. Depending
upon what record one consults, he was born anywhere between the years 1833 and
1846. James died of chronic bronchitis in Albany,NY on 11 Nov 1903, age 57 and was
buried at St. Mary's Cem. James was probably closer to age 67 than age 57 when he
died.

James Murphy, age 10 came to the US in 1850 on the ship MARMION with his
mother and siblings. He is probably the James Murphy who declared his intentions to
become and became a US citizen on 24 Oct.1856 with Bernard Murphy witnessing the
event.61 No further information is on the naturalization document. Bernard Murphy was
naturalized the same day. If this James Murphy is the correct one he would have to be
at least 18 years of age when he was naturalized and therefore would have been older
than 10 years when he immigrated in 1850 If an immigrant came to this country under
age 18 it was not always necessary for him to file a declaration of intention. One could
declare his intent and be naturalized the same day.

James Murphy worked as a manual laborer in the City of Albany. He, like his father
before him, owned no property and left no will, probably because he probably did not
have very much to leave.

Mary Thompson was probably born in Co. Longford as this county's name was
inscribed on the gravestone of her mother and brother in St. Agnes Cem. There were
no parents given on Mary's death certificate but according to the death record of her
sister Bridget Thompson who died in Albany 18 Apr 1909 their parents were Barnard &
Mary (McAnerney) Thompson. Mary's death notice says she was 37 years and 2
months of age, wife of James Murphy, sister of James Thompson and sister-in-law of
John, Patrick and Bernard Murphy.62

NY SP:John McGirk/Bridget Murphy, died 3 Mar 1941 in Albany,
Albany Co., NY66 buried in St. Agnes Cem., Menands, Albany Co.,
NY.67 In 1880 James was placed in LaSalle School for boys in
Albany. This was probably done because with the death of his
mother two year's earlier and other family changes there was no one
to care for the younger children. An old record book at LaSalle
School says that James was the son of James & Mary Murphy,
mother deceased, guardian Lawrence Mahar.

In 1880 Rose and her sister Catherine were admitted to St. Vincent's Female
Orphan Asylum on Elm St. in the City of Albany. She was admitted by Mary Murphy
was the daughter of James & Mary Murphy, mother deceased, born 1873, baptized St.
Patrick's Church in Albany. Rose was removed from the orphanage by her unnamed
brother at an unspecified date (Albany Catholic Diocesan Record).

In 1903 Rose was residing with Catherine Murphy, widow of her great-uncle Patrick.
When Catherine wrote her will on 13 June 1903 she bequeathed Rose $1000 provided
Rose was still residing with her at the time of Catherine's decease.

After the death of her first husband John D. Mahar Rose was forced to place her
two eldest daughters in St. Vincent's and her youngest daughter in St. Margaret's Infant
Home in Albany and do domestic work to earn a living. Catherine died in St. Margaret's
and the other two girls remained at St. Vincents until their teen age years.

John D. Mahar worked as a laborer in a stove factory in Albany, NY. His daughter
Anna May Rich had vague memories of being taken by trolley as a small child to Troy,
NY to visit relatives. This is being investigated.

The following James Murphy of Albany, NY may be related to the Bernard Murphy
family, perhaps in the third generation and a nephew although I cannot prove this
relationship. This James was living but a few doors away from Bernard Murphy in 1865.
There is a notation in the obit of James’ son who died in 1922 for Rochester, NY
newspapers to copy obit. John F. Murphy (Bernard, Bernard) had a son Francis living in
Rochester at this time. A Bridget Murphy was sponsor for the baptism of James (James,
Bernard, Bernard) Murphy in 1869. She may have been wife of James in question

1. JAMES1 MURPHY, born abt. 1833/34 in Co. Longford, Ireland; died 28 May 1897,
Ae 63 in Albany. NY; buried in St. Agnes Cem.180 He married on 6 Jul 1856 in Albany,

Ae 61 in Albany, NY, buried St. Agnes Cem.182 perhaps daughter of JOHN McCANN
and CATHERINE (---).

James may have been the James Murphy who declared his intentions to become a
US citizen on 19 Aug. 1854. He was age 21, born Co. Longford Ireland, embarked from
Liverpool, Eng. with Albany, NY as his destination.183 He was naturalized 22 Oct. 1857
with Thomas O'Rourke as his witness.184

James worked at various occupations in Albany. He operated a retail liquor
business at 255-1/2 Livingston Ave. from 1894 until his death.

Bridget's parents are not named on her death certificate but she may have been the
daughter of John & Catherine McCann who resided in the 8th Ward of Albany in
1855.185 This couple had a daughter Bridget, age 21 in their household. In 1860.186
Bridget was not living in their household. In 1855 James Murphy, age 24, was boarding
with a Thomas Mahar family who resided near the preceding John McCann family.
James Murphy had resided in the City of Albany for three years.187
