DESCENDANTS OF JOHN ROSS of IPSWICH, MASS.

                        First Generation

	1.	JOHN ROSS was born say 1630 and probably died after 1697 when he had horses on the common in Ipswich and before 1704 when the estate of his unmarried son Jonathan was settled in Essex Co. MA in which he was not mentioned.

John Ross (1) of Ipswich, Mass. may have come to America from Scotland on the John & Sarah in 1652. There were several John Ross' on the list of Scotch prisoners captured at the Battle of Dunbar and the Ipswich John Ross may have been one of them (1)

John was in Ipswich in 1664 where he had a share as a tenant of Mr. Wardwell in the Plum Island section of the town. He had horses on the common in 1697. A Killcross and a Fennel Ross resided in Ipswich at the same time as John and they may have been related.(2)

John Ross (1) supposedly married Mary Haggett the daughter of Henry & Ann Haggett of Wenham, Mass. on 1 Jan. 1662 in Ipswich. This information was on the computer index of the LDS Church and gives the Vital Records of Ipswich, MA.as the source. I did not find this marriage in the published vital records of Ipswich or Wenham. A letter to the Town Clerk of Ipswich who searched her records did not reveal this marriage. The public libraries of Ipswich and Wenham were contacted and their local history collections were searched without results. The Congregational Church Library in Boston was also contacted again without result. The Haggett Family is frequently mentioned in the records of the Congregational Church of Wenham that have survived and since Mary Ross was baptized there (as an adult) this marriage may have indeed taken place.

On 20 Oct. 1706 a Mary Ross sen, aged above 60 was baptized in the Congregational Church in Wenham.(3) On 19 Aug.1705, a Daniel Ross (adult) was baptized in this church and on 8 Feb. 1707, a Joseph Ross (grown) son of John Ross was also baptized there.(4) A Mary Ross died in
Windham, CT 5 Nov. 1725 age 79 and this was most ikely John Ross' wife who was residing with one of her sons.(5) Daniel & Joseph Ross were residents of Windham, CT at this time.

There was no probate record for John Ross in Essex Co. MA at Salem, MA.The births of his children are recorded in the Ipswich Vital Records as children of John Ross with no mother named. The births of John's children correspond with the brothers and sisters of one Jonathan
Ross whose estate was settled in Salem in 1704. On 3 Nov. 1704 the assets of Jonathan Ross were divided among his two brothers and six sisters, each receiving 02-12-10-1/2. They are listed in the following order in the settlement papers: Mary Ross Southwick, Sarah Hoar alias
Ross, Abigail Ross, Daniel Ross, Susannah Ross, Hannah Ross, Joseph Ross, and Eliza Ross, Daniel Ross of Windham and Joseph Ross of Ipswich gave bond for their sisters Hannah Rust alias Ross and Susannah Eborn, alias Ross.(6)

JOHN supposedly married MARY HAGGETT on 1 Jan 1662. Mary was born about 1646 (calculated VR). She died on 5 Nov 1725, ae 79 in Windham, Windham Co., CT.(7) See this work for Haggett Genealogy.
