3. THOMAS STRATTON (JOHN) was born on 26 Oct 1670 in Watertown, Middlesex
Co., MA.
Thomas Stratton and his family lived in the Western Precinct of Watertown. 19 On 1
Dec. 1727 Thomas was chosen Surveyor of Highways. 20 In 1731 the town paid him
for timber from his farm for a bridge near Deacon Livermore's mill. 21 He was still
residing in Watertown when "consideration of ye petition of Thomas Stratton and others
was adjoined to ye next selectman's meeting". The petition did not come up at the next
meeting, and Thomas's name does not appear on the town or church records 22
THOMAS married DORCAS MAXWELL, daughter of JAMES MAXWELL and
DORCAS STONE, on 15 Feb 1699 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA.23 Dorcas was

Third Generation
17. JAMES STRATTON (THOMAS, JOHN) was born on 29 Jun 1700 in Watertown,
Middlesex Co., MA. He died on 22 Oct 1775 in Athol, Worcester Co., MA.33
James Stratton lived in Charlestown & Boston for a few years after his
marriage and then removed to Stonington, CT for a few years.34 The family left
Stonington about 1736 and settled in Athol, MA.35 They lived on what is now known
as Pleasant Street in Athol in the part of the town than known as East Pequoid Hill.36
James was on the 1771 tax list for Town of Athol, his real estate worth 5-8-0 - he
owned a house and adjoining shop, livestock etc. 37
James Stratton, cordwinder, wrote his will 15 Mar 1774 and the document
was probated 6 Nov 1776. He gave his sons James, William, Stephen & Pegleg
Stratton part & part alike in his estate. James also received an additional 13 pounds, 6
shillings & eight pence. He gave his daughters Abigail Chase Deborah Kendall
& Elizabeth Townsend equal shares in the estate.
Mary & John Rand, children of his deceased daughter Mary Rand received their
mother's share of the estate. Since daughters Deborah Kendall & Elizabeth
Townsend lived with James Sr. some time after they became 18 years of age they each
received an extra eight pounds. James Stratton Jr. was named executor of the estate.
Jno Haven, Stephen Batchelor, & Reuben Graves witnessed the document.38
JAMES married DEBORAH RAND, daughter of WILLIAM RAND and PERSIS
PIERCE, on 12 Oct 1721 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA.39 Deborah was
born say 1702 and died before 1748 when James signed a paper concerning some money
coming to his children in the estate of their grandparents William and Persis Rand of
Charlestown. 40

44. ABIGAIL STRATTON (JAMES, THOMAS, JOHN) was born on 2
Mar 1722 in Athol, Worcester Co., MA. She died before 11 Apr 1792 when Hannah
Berry Ellison requested that the Court appoint Joel Grout of Gerry to be administrator
of the estate of Abigail Chase, late of Petersham deceased who was one of the executors
of the Last will and testament of Henry Chase late of Petersham, deceased. Henry
Chase was the other executor and "has removed out of the Government and the estate of
said Henry deceased was never fully administered 56On 5 June 1792 Joel Grout & Peter
Chase were appointed administrators of Abigail's estate.57 On 11 June 1792 Ephraim
Sternes, John Parmente & Joseph Negas took an inventory of Abigail's estate which
amounted to L32:10:00.58 The settlement of Abigail's estate was made on 21 Oct.
1794. Money was paid to Henry Chase, James Chase, Elisha Chase, Caleb Chase,
Stephen Chase Peter Chase, Deborah Chase, Hannah Ellison, wife of
Jacob Ellison, Dorcas Grout, wife of Abel Grout, Phebe Mahan wife of John
Mahan Molly Dorrey, wife of William Dorrey and Betty Horsley, wife of David
Horsley, children of Abigail Chase. Each of them received L0:17:9 59
ABIGAIL married HENRY CHASE, son of ISAAC CHASE and HANNAH BERRY,
on 29 Dec 1764 in Petersham, Worcester Co., MA60 Henry was born on 2 Mar 1722 in

Henry Chase of Sutton, MA served in the Revolutionary War as a private in
Capt. David Batchelor's Company, Col. Joseph Read's 20th Regiment of
Massachusetts, muster roll dated 1 Aug. 1775. He enlisted 1 May 1775 serving
three months and eight days; he applied for a bounty coat or its equivalent in money
dated Roxbury 24 Oct. 177662
In the name of God amen this nineteenth day of August 1776 I Henry Chase of
Petersham in the County of Worcester late of the Massachusetts Bay........being in
health and perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God therefor but yet .......to
mind the mortality of my body & knowing it is appointed for all men once to die do
make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally & first of all I
give and recommend my soul into the hands of God ...gave it & my body I recommend
to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian.....at the defination of my executors and
as ....my ......wordily estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give,
demise & dispose of in the following manner or form viz I will that all my just debts be

Thomas Smith came to New England in the Ship Primrose in 1635 98
He was a proprietor in Watertown, MA in 1635 and a grantee of eight lots with
a homestall of eight acres.99 Thomas Smith was a freeman in 1637.100
Thomas Smith's will was dated 16 Mar 1687/88 and proved 8 May 1693. His
wife Mary & son Thomas Jr. were executors. He mentioned his eight children and
grandson James Smith of Piscattaqa Fort 101
