RALPH TOMPKINS (TOMKINS) & PHILIP KNIGHT
               FAMILIES OF SALEM MASSACHUSETTS

                   RALPH TOMPKINS OF SALEM

                             First Generation

	1.	RALPH TOMPKINS was born about 1585 in England.1 He died in 1666 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA.

Ralph Tompkins immigrated to this country September 1635 on the ship
TRUELOVE. The passenger list of this vessel lists Ralph and his family as follows: "RALPH TOMKINS, Husb - Ae 50; KAT. TOMKINS vxor, Ae 58; ELIZABETH TOMKINS, Ae 18; SAMVEL TOMKINS Ae 22; MARIE
TOMKINS Ae 14" 2

Ralph was a member of the First Church in Dorchester, MA in 1636 and
a freeman in Dorchester MA on 2 May 1638.3 He was left a household article in the
estate of widow Judith Smead of Dorchester in 1639 4

On 29 Jan 1648/9 the Salem selectman granted a small piece of meadow lying near
Major-General Endecotts land in a corner by a small brook and a great swamp5 There
are other land evidences recorded in Essex County for Ralph Tompkins.

On 27 Nov. 1666, administration of Ralph's estate was granted to John
Tompkins who presented an inventory on 12 Nov. 1666. The Court ordered that
the five acres of land mentioned in the inventory be given to the said John and after
Ralph's debts were paid the remainder of the estate was to be given to Mary, daughter
of John Foster 6

The inventory of Ralph Tompkins estate was taken by Thomas Gardner and
John Kitchin. 12 Nov. 1666 Samuel (his mark) Aburne, aged 52 years deposed that
at the burial of the wife of Ralph Tomkins, late deceased, as soon as the company
had departed he went into said Ralph, who was weak and not likely long to
survive his wife, to put him in mind of making his will. He also wished to
speak with him about the will which his wife made which was to dispose of what was
hers before her marriage. Deponent told Tompkins that his sister, Tompkins wife, had
bequeathed all her property to Mary Foster because she had been so helpful to her
during her long sickness, doing for her what nobody else would do. Tompkins replied
that he fully agreed to this but he would like to have the use of it during his life and he
would rather increase than diminish it. Before making his will he would first talk with
his son Foster, and deponent thought that it was his intention to give what he had to
Mary Foster. Also that Tomkins was of this mind when he was removing to
Bridgewater, and when, thinking never to see him again, depondent reminded
him of Mary Foster.7

An (her M Mark) Small aged about 50 years, deposed that Goodwife Tompkins told
her that she had willed all to Mary Foster and that the cow was brought up from a calf
for said Mary.8Edward Grove, aged about 40 years also deposed..9

Nathaniel Felton, aged about 50 years, deposed that Tompkins desired to
have the bed and other household stuff, but if he removed to Bridgewater to his son
Samuel's.........10

RALPH married (1) KATHERINE FOSTER, daughter of PETER FOSTER and
ELLEN, on 6 Nov 1608 in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, England.11 Katherine was born

RALPH also married (2) HANNAH ABORNE. Hannah died about 1665/1666..16 Her birth date is uncertain. She was perhaps the daughter of THOMAS
ABORNE/EBORNE, an early settler of Salem, MA. She may have been much
younger than her husband and within the child bearing years but this is conjectural. Samuel Aborne calls Hannah his sister in Ralph Tompkins estate papers. Samuel deposed age 52 in 1666

They had the following child

+	7	F	vi.	MARTHA TOMPKINS was born about 1636.

                         Second Generation

	2.	JOHN Sr. TOMPKINS (RALPH) was born about 1610. He died on 23 Jun 1681 in Salem, Essex Co., MA.17

John Tompkins Sr. came to America prior to 20 March 1636 when he was
promised he would be received as an inhabitant of Salem, MA "in case he procure free dismission" from some other church.18On 12 July 1637 two acres of land was granted to him fulfilling this promise 19

On 22 Aug. 1663 the Salem selectmen granted John Tompkins all the land lying at the end of the five acres he purchased of Jefferie Estee next to Robert Cotte 20 John was a freeman in Salem in 164221

At a Salem Quarterly Court Meeting June 1672 John Tomkins Sr. & John Tomkins Jr. among others, certified that the "being nere neighbores vnto Elizabeth Goodel the daughter of Edw. Beachom and having had acquaintance with her from childhood to her marriage Do testify yt according to our best observation and judgment shee hath been of
an honest civill conversation & one yt would not wrong the truth in her speeches." 22

At a Commissioners Court at Salem 2 Mar 1679 John Tomkins, among others,
refused to take the oath as tythingmen and were fined 23

At the time of is death he owned land, a dwelling house, barn, outhouse,
orchard and about 17 acres of improved land valued at 100 pounds.24

An inventory of John's estate was taken 30 June 1681 by Edward Batter &
Nathaniel Felton Jr. amounting to 141-17-00d. Administration of the estate was granted
to Mary, the relict on 28 June 1681. An addition to the inventory of 9f taken by the
same persons mentioned that the estate of the relict before marriage was 125-12-00d.
This record mentions John's children in the following order: Nathaniel, John, Sarah,
Elizabeth, Mary, Deborah and Priscilla Tompkins. The estate papers contain the
depositions of Josiah White and Rememberance, his wife - these deponents testified
that they heard John Tompkins Sr. say sundry times that it was his will that his son
Nathaniel Tompkins being his eldest son should have his then dwelling house with the
barne and ground thereunto belonging for he had given his other children something
considerable for their portions and this was spoken a short time before the said
Tompkins his disease - Sworn 30 Nov. 1681. The widow was to have two thirds of the
house and land during her life and son John Jr. 5li; the five childen of Hugh Jones,
whose wife Hannah was now deceased were to have 20s each. The remainder of the
estate was equally divided among the seven children of the deceased.25

John may be the John Tomkins who married (1) MARGARET GOODMAN on 27 Aug
1632 in Edlesborough, England.26 Margaret died on 18 Jul 1672 in Salem, Essex Co.,
MA.27

On 30 June 1653 John Tompkin’s wife was fined for wearing a silk hood .28

JOHN and MARGARET had the following children:29

JOHN also married (2) MARY READ in Sep 1673 in Salem, MA.30

	7.	MARTHA TOMPKINS (RALPH) was born about 1636. She deposed 1670 ae about 34
but she was probably older.31 Martha Tompkins may have married Richard Adams after
the death of her husband John Foster A deed dated 16 Nov. 1688 conveyed land to Martha,
relict of John Foster, deceased, my intended wife. Richard’s whole estate to go to Martha
provided she has issue with him, if not estate to her children 32

Martha Foster, among others, was presented to the church for the purpose of receiving
communion in 1667.33

Martha is probably the daughter of Ralph's second marriage but this is
conjectural. Ralph's first wife Katherine Foster was living in 1636 but would have been
past the child bearing age to have a daughter born 1636 or later. Ralph's second wife
Hannah Aborne may have been a much younger than her husband and
within the child bearing years but again this is conjectural.
