DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL I UTLEY & HANNAH HATCH First Generation 1. SAMUEL I UTLEY was born say 1635. He died about 1662 in Scituate, Plymouth Co., MA. Samuel Utley I was supposedly from Thorns West Riding, Yorkshire, England1 Samuel I was a freeman in Scituate, MA in 16572 At a meeting of the Plymouth Court on 3 June 1662 "Mr. Hatherley is desired and deputed by the Court to administer an oath to the widdow VTLEY, of Scituate for the truth of the inventory of her husband's estate, whoe is lately deceased, in regard that shee is weake and ill, and not able to make her psonall appeerance att the Court." At the Court Meeting of 10 June 1662 Mr.Timothy Hatherly was again appointed to administer the oath 3 Widow Utley's "weake and ill" condition may have been due to pregnancy or the recent birth of a child. It is possible that she did not survive this illness and another member of her family raised the children or she may have remarried. Eventually the Utley children appear in the records of Stonington, CT. SAMUEL I married HANNAH HATCH, daughter of THOMAS HATCH and LYDIA, on 6 Dec 1658 in Scituate, Plymouth Co., MA4. Hannah was born about 1639 and was christened on 14 Jun 1646 in Scituate, Plymouth Co., MA.5 They had the following children: + 2 F i. LYDIA UTLEY was born on 28 Dec 1659. + 3 M ii. He died on 9 Feb 1722/1723, ae 60 in Stonington, New London Co., CT and was buried in Great Plains Cem, No. Stonington, CT.12 Samuel Utley II lived in Stonington, CT where an ear mark to identify his livestock is recorded "The mark properly belonging to Samuel Utley - both neat cattle and swine and horses is a crop of the left ear and a slit on the underside of the same ear and a slit under the left or near ear i.e. on the underside ofthe left ear" Entered 29 Aug. 168313 Samuel Utley II was admitted to the First Church of Stonington on 1 Apr. 1695 14. His wife Sarah was baptized there as Sarah, wife of Samuel Utley on 27 June 169215. On 22 Feb. 1687/88 Samuel Utley of Stonington deeded land to John Maxon of Feversham - 100 acres, 10 pounds.16 The following are land records for Samuel on file in Stonington, CT: 21 Oct. 1703 - line agreement between Samuel Utley and Isaac Wheeler - Samuel had purchased 100 acres of land in Stonington from Sarah Cheseborough in partnership with Thomas Hewitt, part of land originally granted to Nathaniel Cheseborough. Wheeler had 38 acres laid out to him upon the two tracts which adjoined each other (LR 2:149) 2 Mar 1722/23 - Jeremiah Utley sold to his brother Samuel Utley "land grant given and devised to me by my father Samuel Utley late of Stonington". The deed mentions Samuel Utley's will (LR 3:428). 15 May 1724 - James Utley of Windham Village sold to Samuel Utley. his brother, land granted him by father Samuel Utley in will (LR 3:429) 2 Mar 1708 - Thomas Hewitt sold to Samuel Utley land bounded on south by ministry lands and on north land bounded by land owned by Samuel Utley (LR 2:398). 9 Apr 1714 - Nathan & Samuel Cheseborough quit claimed land to Samuel Utley which was land their sister Sarah Gallop sold to Utley (LR 2:536) 3 Nov. 1738- Japeth Utley of Woodstock, MA quit claimed to brother Samuel Utley of Stonington land from estate of his father deceased (LR 5:106). The Last Will & Testament of Samuel Utley is dated 2 Feb. 1722/23. Sarah Utley, Samuel's wife was executrix and her son Samuel was executor. The widow received 1/3 of the personal estate,and 20 pounds yearly for life as well as bed, bedding and a negro woman. Samuel Utley jr received land rights in Tolland, CT and his brothers James, Jeremiah, & Japeth inherited lands and money. The Utley daughters Abigail, Sarah, Mary & Lidiah received money. The will was witnessed by Ephraim Minor 2d, Nicholas Frink and Jeremiah Main. The inventory of the estate was taken 5 Mar 1723 by James Minor & Nicholas Frink and widow Sarah Utley, Abigail Scripture, Joseph Ross and Lydia Utley signed off their rights to any real estate belonging to deceased.17 Listed on the inventory of his estate were 11 yds of flax, 22 yds ___cloth, 25 yds of wool, 8 yds of ____ticking; one pr Taylor's sheres & 5 sheres. He could have worked as a tailor or this material may have just covered the clothing needs of his family. An entry in the Diary of Manasseh Minor of Stonington, CT18 has the following notation on page 40 "Samuel Utley's Chill B July 1700. SAMUEL II married SARAH ASHBY, daughter of ANTHONY ASHBY and ABIGAIL HUTCHINSON, on 9 Apr 1691 in Stonington, CT.19 Sarah was born on 16 Dec 1672 in Bradford, Essex Co., MA20 and was christened on 27 Jun 1692 in First Church, Stonington, CT.21 She died in Apr 1740 ae 66 in Stonington, New London Co., CT and was buried in Great Plains Cem, No. Stonington, CT.22 They had the following children:23 + 7 F i. The Barbour Collection at CSL gives the birth date of Japhet as 31 July 1717. The article in Sons of the Revolution Bulletin says 31 July 1707. Japhet was slain by Indians in Wyoming Valley, CT Massacre (now Wilkesbarre, PA). He was on a tax list for the Year 1778 in Wyoming 49 The administration of his estate says "late of Westmoreland" was granted to Crocker Jones on 25 Nov. 1778 and Daniel Core gave bond. The first inventory amounted to 21:8:4.Japhet’s assets were: one bible, one pail, old iron, one pint bason, one clock, little kettle, one small cow, one cow50taken by William Buck & Lebbeus Tubbs on 20 Dec. 1778 and a second inventory was taken by Samuel Spaulding and John Jenkins 30 Dec. 1778.51 JAPHET married ANNA MARCY, daughter of JOHN MARCY and MARY TUFTS, on 6 Dec 1738 in Woodstock, CT.52 They had the following children:53 73 M i.
