One Copeland Line (Lawrence, William Sr., William Jr. Lydia & Anna Fassett) First Generation 1. LAWRENCE COPELAND was born about 1599 possibly in Scotland. He died on 30 Dec 1699 age 100 in Braintree, Norfolk Co., MA.1 According to the Diary of Samuel Sewell, Vol. 1:420, Joseph Arnold of Braintree, an octogenarian (a person 80 or between 80 and 89 years old) testified that Lawrence Copeland was 110 years of age when he died. There was a gravestone for Lawrence in the Hancock Cemetery of that part of Quincy, Massachusetts which was once the town of Braintree, but this stone has long disappeared. It supposedly stood to the rear of the City Hall 2 If indeed Lawrence was 100 years of age or more at the time of his death, he would have been c53 years of age or more at the birth of his first child and 73 years or more at the birth of his last offspring. This would be rare but not biologically impossible. If this is so, Lydia Copeland, wife of Lawrence must have been a great deal younger than her husband. Lawrence Copeland was in the Town of Exeter, NH on 3 April 1638 when he witnessed an Indian deed of that date.3 He may have been a follower of Rev. Wheelwright.4 Lawrence removed to Braintree, MA before 6 Dec. 1643 when he was fined L2 by the Court for an offense of converting L65 wages illegally.5 On 5 Aug. 1673 Lawrence and two others of Braintree were discharged from ordinary training. This was no doubt because of his age.6 On 29 Oct. 1678, Copeland took the oath of Allegiance.7 On 18 Mar 1677/78 Lawrence assisted in laying out a highway in Braintree.8 Lawrence’s will was dated 20 June 1698, He left his house and other land to son Thomas Copeland His son William Copeland received land. Son John Copeland received 15 pounds, daughter Lidia White received 6 pounds, daughters Hannah & Abigail received 10 pounds each plus livestock & household goods. Land formerly owned by deceased son Ephraim was to go to Ephraim’s brothers. Eldest son Thomas Copeland was appointed executor and trusty and beloved friends were appointed overseers of the estate. The will was witnessed by Joseph Arnold, Jonathan Hayward & Joseph Allen.9 LAWRENCE married LYDIA TOWNSEND on 12 Oct 1651 in Braintree, Norfolk Co.,10 MA.
