(14) On 30 June 1659, William BROWNE of Salem, merchant, sold land located in Cape Ann side to Zebulon HILL and his brother John HILL of Salem. (15) On 17 Apr. 1685 the brothers divided the land Zebulon receiving the easterly part.(16) On 27 (7) 1652 Zebulon HILL, deposed at Salem concerning Thomas WATHING (17) On 14 July 1689 Zebulon HILL was admitted to membership in the First Church of Salem "after the usual manner".(18() On 19 (12) 1660 Elizabeth HILL, wife of Zebulon made her confession and was admitted to the Salem Church the following day. Zebulon's will was dated 29 Mar 1699/1700 and was probated 11 Mar

                       Third Generation

	6.	ROGER HILL (PHILIP, MR.) was born about 1640 in Somerset Co., England. He died in 1710 in Beverly, Essex Co., MA . (33)

This Roger HILL is not to be confused with the Roger HILL of Saco, Maine who
was married to Mary CROSS and had four children baptized in the First Church of Salem, Mass.in 1678. Roger HILL of Saco took refuge in Salem at the time of the Indian Wars .See Sybil Noyes, Charles Thornton Libby & Walter Goodwin Davis,
Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire {Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc.. 1983 reprint}, Page 329).

Roger HILL married Elizabeth, surname unknown. Elizabeth was living 1721.

On 8 Jan. 1708/09 Roger HILL of Beverly, MA, blacksmith, deeded land in
Beverly to his Aunt Abigail HILL, widow of Deacon John HILL who was the
paternal uncle of Roger HILL. The land was originally part of Deacon HILL's
homestead property and had been previously given to Roger HILL. After Roger's death the land was to go to his son John HILL. The deed mentions the rights of the unnamed heirs of Philip HILL, lately deceased, of Bedminster, England, father of Roger HILL. (34)

On 6 Sept. 1721, John HILL, mariner of Beverly,. MA with the consent of
Elizabeth HILL, "my mother & relict widow of Roger HILL, deceased of Beverly" and Meriam my now wife" sold land in Beverly to John OBER of that place.(35) On 29 June 1725 John HILL of Manchester, MA, weaver, alias husbandman, with the consent of Meriam his wife sold land in Beverly to Hezekiah OBER of Beverly. The land was Roger HILL's share of the Beverly common land.(36) Roger HILL's widow's consent was not given here so perhaps Elizabeth HILL had died between 1721 & 1725 or her consent was not needed.

On 28 Dec. 1710 Elizabeth, widow of Roger HILL and John HILL his son ,
administrators; Joseph MORGAN & Joshua BISSON, all of Beverly, gave bond for
the estate of Roger HILL of Beverly, deceased. This same day an inventory of
Roger's estate was taken by Joshua BISSON & Cornelius BAKER. Roger owned a
house, barns and about one acre of land, livestock and household items. These are the only two documents in Roger's file at Salem, MA Probate Court. (37)

Among the soldiers who went with Capt. William Rayment on the Canada
Expedition of 1690 was Corp. Roger HILL.(38) In 1734 when the Society of Canada
Soldiers was formed in Beverly, Zebulon HILL, his son appeared for Corp. Roger HILL (39)

This Roger HILL is not mentioned in the indexed nine volume published set
of Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County Mass. The indices of the court records after 1686 housed at Salem were researched for Roger's name but it did not appear.

John and Zebulon HILL are the only children of Roger and Elizabeth HILL
whose births are recorded in the printed Vital Records of Beverly, MA. I have also searched the vital records of nearby towns (i.e. Salem, Manchester, Boston etc.) as well as the IGI compiled by the LDS Church but found no other children of this couple recorded.

There are five HILL marriages or intentions of marriage recorded in printed VRS of
Beverly, MA between the years 1710 & 1728 One is for John HILL, a known son of Roger HILL. Three of the other four HILLS married in these years all had children named Roger & Elizabeth and it is likely they were named after their HILL grandparents. I could not place the Abigail HILL whose intentions of marriage were recorded 11 Sept. 1726 to Benjamin ALLEN of Manchester, MA. Two children of this couple were baptized in the First Church of Salem, MA - Benjamin on 2 Apr. 1727 and Joseph on 2 Feb. 1728.A Benjamin ALLEN witnessed one of the John HILL deeds but there are several Benjamin ALLENS in the Beverly-Salem area around this time and no way to identify the witness.

Fourth Generation

	34.	THOMAS HILL (surmised) (ROGER, PHILIP, MR.) was born about 1685/1690.

Thomas HILL is probably the son of Roger and Elizabeth HILL of Beverly, MA
however I could find no definite proof of this relationship and can only offer sketchy and circumstantial evidence for my conclusions. Thomas HILL's first born son was named Roger and his first born daughter was called Elizabeth. They were born in Beverly, MA 1710 & 1712 respectively.l(57) Roger HILL's known son John born 1689 and Thomas HILL both lived in the Towns of Beverly and Manchester at the same time where they both married and had children. John HILL was the only child of Roger mentioned in the estate papers. I will tentatively place Thomas as the son of Roger HILL. Perhaps proof will surface in the future to prove or disprove my theory.

Thomas HILL married Mary ROBERTS in Beverly, MA on 16 Apr. 1710.(58) Their intention of marriage was recorded in Boston on 4 Apr 1709/10 and this record says Thomas was of Boston and Mary of Beverly.(59) I have not yet found parents of Mary ROBERTS. I suspect that Thomas worked as a mariner out of Boston.

A Thomas HILL appears on a muster roll of the British ship PROVINCE GALLEY
dated 1711- Thomas HILL of Beverly entered the ship's service 21 April 1711 and served one month, 23 days, money due him 0-8-1. It is most likely that this is the Thomas HILL who married Mary ROBERTS.(60)

I did not find a death date and place for Thomas or Mary HILL. There were
no deeds or probate records for them in Essex County MA. If Thomas did indeed follow the sea he may not have owned any land. I found a Thomas HILL who lived in Attleborough, MA and Cumberland, RI, and since Thomas' son Roger HILL lived in these places at a later time, I investigated this Thomas. A Cumberland, RI Probate record proved this Thomas HILL was another person. Thomas HILL of Cumberland wrote his will 20 Oct. 1748. The document was proved 20 Jan. 1766 and mentions wife Abijah; sons Samuel, William, Simion & David HILL; daughter Martha, wife of Jonathan COTTER; daughter-in-law Mary wife of Thomas JOSLYN. (61)
Samuel HILL, son of Thomas & Elizabeth (Quembee) HILL, was born 23 May 1716; William HILL son of Thomas & Abijah HILL was born 19 Nov. 1724 and Simion HILL, son of Thomas & Abijah HILL was born 27 Oct. 1721.(62) I have checked the probate records and land evidences for Bristol County MA but found nothing for Thomas HILL who married Mary ROBERTS. Thomas HILL is a common name and difficult to trace. The Registry of Deeds at Exeter, NH were also checked but no deeds were found for Thomas HILL, son of Roger HILL.. This Thomas could have migrated anywhere perhaps with one of his children.

Note the 12 year hiatus between Elizabeth born 1712 and Jonaathan born 1724. There is also a Thomas Hill whose intentions of marriage was recorded in Manchester to Anna Wallas on 9 May 1736.(63) This may be a son of Thomas or perhaps a second marriage for Thomas Sr.

THOMAS married MARY ROBERTS on 10 Apr 1710 in Beverly, Essex Co., MA.

They had the following children: (64)

+	61	M	i.	ROGER HILL was born on 28 Jan 1710/1711 and died after 1 Nov 1795.

Fifth Generation

	61.	ROGER HILL (THOMAS, ROGER, PHILIP, MR.) was born on 28 Jan 1710/1711 in Beverly, Essex Co., MA. He died after 1 Nov 1795. (84)

Roger HILL worked as a cooper and farmer. He resided in Beverly,
Manchester, Attleborough & Douglas, MA; Cumberland, RI and Winchester, NH.

On 9 Nov. 1744 Roger HILL, cooper, of Attleborough, MA purchased land in
Attleborough from Nehemiah & Mercy OLNEY of Smithfield, RI. The land was
located at a place called Little Pond and formerly belonged to the father of
Mercy OLNEY who was Joseph DAVIS.(85) The Town of Cumberland, RI was separated from the Town of Attleborough, MA in 1745 and incorporated in 1746. On 8 Feb. 1768 Roger HILL of Cumberland for the sum of 105 pounds sold his homestead near Little Pond with dwelling house, to Stephen WHIPPLE of Smithfield, RI. On 15 Jan. 1768 Joseph TWITCHELL of Sherburne, MA sold land in Douglas, MA
to Roger HILL of Cumberland, RI. The land consisted of 50 acres and was
located in the 56th lot laid out to Twitchell in the last land division in
Douglas. The deed was recorded 10 June 1774.(87) I found no deed of sale for this land in Worcester land records but sometime in or near the end of the Revolutionary War, Roger and his family removed to Winchester, Cheshire County, NH.

On 10 Feb. 1782/83 Roger HILL and his family were warned out of Winchester
as was the custom when the town fathers suspected families might become public charges when they owned no land or had no visible means of support. The warning out record reads, "To James Franklin one of the Constables of the Town of Winchester greeting: In the name of this State you are hereby required forthwith to warn out Roger HILL, Jonathan HILL, Anthony COMBS, Lydia COMBS, Daniel COMBS, George HILL, Joseph HILL, Barnabus HILL, Stephen COMBS, Lydia HILL, Rosilla HILL, Phebe COMBS, Prudence COMBS, Rosilla EDMUNDS, and the widow Anna FASSETT to depart out of this town within fourteen days...." . (88)

Soon after this warning out, Roger became a land owner in Winchester. On
23 May 1782 Peter HOLBROOK of Richmond, NH sold land located in Winchester to Roger HILL of that town, yeoman. The land consisted of 138 acres.(89) On 23 Aug. 1784 Roger HILL, cooper, of Winchester sold land in that town to Jonathan HILL.(90) On 10 Sept. 1784 Anthony COMBS of Winchester, yeoman, purchased 20 acres of land which was part of the farm on which Roger HILL lived from Hill..(91) On 26 Sept. 1787 Roger HILL of Winchester, cooper, sold land to Joseph LONG of Winchester. The land involved was part of the farm on which Roger lived, on the north east corner of Jonathan HILL's land. (92) Jonathan HILL was Roger's son and Long & Combs were his sons-in-law. On 1 Nov. 1795 Anthony COMBS of Winchester, yeoman, purchased 40 acres of land in Winchester from Roger HILL of that place.(93) The name of Lydia HILL, wife of Roger HILL, does not appear in any of these deeds.

Roger HILL is not listed in either the 1790 or 1800 census of NH but he
may have been living with a relative although he would have been well on in
years at this time. There is no probate record for either Roger or Lydia HILL at Cheshire County, New Hampshire Probate Court in Keene.

The births for Roger's children are recorded in Cumberland, RI.(94) The first two children's births are also recorded in Manchester, MA.(95) The first two
children were no doubt born in the latter place before the move to Rhode Island.
